Inspired by Europeans, quarantined but gathered on their balconies to keep company with music, the Music Unites Jamaica Foundation has put out a call for Jamaicans to follow suit in a show of solidarity in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.
The foundation seeks to build awareness and to preserve Jamaica’s musical heritage.
To show gratitude to those on the front line as well all to keep the citizenry in good spirits, the foundation’s executive director Rosina Moder is encouraging Jamaicans to either sing or play the popular song ‘Evenin’ Time’ every Friday evening at 6:00 p.m.
The lyrics were written by Jamaican cultural icon Louise Bennett-Coverly, with music by Barbara Ferland.
“There are government workers out there, people still at their workplace – especially the healthcare workers. So it’s a tribute,” Moder said.
“I was thinking of what would be the best song. There is always One Love, but then I was thinking ‘Evenin’ Time’ is a well-loved song by so many people here. They love it so much,” she added.
“It’s a sweet and sour way to celebrate my 35 years of living here,” the Austrian native told The Gleaner.
Moved by the actions of musicians in Italy and Spain, Moder hopes that Jamaicans will participate in the musical tribute so as to bring good vibes and comradery to the nation during this difficult period.
“I’m trying with all my passion to assist in the preservation and promotion of all Jamaican music, outside of the popular genre, aside from playing the recorder, and teaching and writing a Caribbean method for it,” said Moder, who is the author of a book on playing the recorder.
