The 51st anniversary celebrations of the National Chorale of Jamaica (NCOJ) recently got under way with a thanksgiving service at the St Jago de la Vega Church in Spanish Town.

Patron Sir Kenneth Hall, in his congratulatory message, said the occasion was not only one for celebration and delight, but importantly, to recall the immense contribution of the Chorale in countering the cultural imperialism that was a key feature of colonisation.

“By repurposing the classical and choral tradition as a means of resisting and invalidating colonisation, the group has played a great role in the fashioning and sustaining of a distinct Jamaican cultural identity, a fact that should not be lost on us,” Hall said.

He added that the NCOJ had used the imposed musical forms to “integrate rather than separate, to liberate rather than oppress, mainly by integrating classical music forms into the vibrant Jamaican aesthetic to realise a welcome new expression” and that it was not a coincidence that the Chorale’s ranks over the years included several Jamaicans who have distinguished themselves in the international classical music sphere.

He expressed gratitude to all members and supporters over the years, and reminded that the Chorale also played a vital role in providing opportunities for musical training for many Jamaicans, a feature which must continue for the continued development of the nation.

Chairman Christopher Samuda, whose message was read by Director Paulette Mitchell, said the Chorale would continue to build on its significant musical heritage as “Jamaica’s national choir” in seeking out the best voices that will enable the Chorale to continue its mission of providing spiritual uplifting to the present generation, as well as for those to come.

Founded in 1972, the National Chorale had its beginnings with the aims of bridging perceived cultural gaps in Jamaican musical presentations. Its programmes have over the years presented music from a wide variety of sources, with a common bond of high excellence, earning both the popular and critical appreciation of audiences in Jamaica and overseas.

In 2022, to mark the significant milestone of its golden anniversary, which coincided with Jamaica’s 60th anniversary of Independence, the Chorale gave special recognition to its stalwart members through its National Award of Excellence.
