Hosting standout events is nothing new for reggae artiste and CEO of The Compound Tom ‘Panic’ Jones. Adding Rhythm Sundays, a live music, art, and fashion showcase, to the rotation, The Compound has teamed up with Ahmeraki Cafe at the Constant Spring Golf Club in St Andrew, where the series made its debut on Sunday.
The night featured live portraits by Artrich Studios’ live portrait artist Richard Smith, a showcase of Trendzy by Ackeilia’s spring collection, and live music from Dub Squad.
“People can find a nice bracelet or a nice bathing suit or maybe art to put on their wall while they are listening to some lovely live music. This is the pilot, and we want to make sure it goes as smoothly as possible,” the artiste shared with The Gleaner on Sunday.
Known for hosting Tuesday Service for the past two years, Jones said he had long intended to create a Sunday experience.
“We’ve always planned to have something up here on Sundays. We’ve been working on it, [and] we want to make it a bit different. I want to incorporate art, fashion, food, and live music because we want to make it run from six up until close to midnight. We want to break it up where people can [be] entertained,” he said.
Jones also credited his team and collaborators for the event’s execution, noting that their continued support plays a key role in bringing each staging to life.
As the first designer featured, Trendzy by Ackeilia’s Ackeilia Caine highlighted the importance of supporting creatives. Caine explained, “We are trying to keep the industry alive. A lot of people do not appreciate or value or see [creatives] work as doing real work.”
Sharing her thoughts on the support from attendees at the first staging, Caine added, “We’re surrounded by a lot of art, [and] not everybody is into that, but for whoever is into it, they will definitely come.”
One of the performers of the night, Tori Lattore, serenaded the audience with a few hits including renditions of reggae artiste Richie Spice’s Brown Skin and Ocean Eyes by American singer-songwriter Billie Eilish. Enjoying her set after the fashion showcase, the audience sang with Lattore and applauded the first singer of the night.
Speaking on the event’s atmosphere, Jones explained that “the music we’re curating is more of a relaxed, sunny evening vibe, not too hard on the ears.”
With a successful first staging, The Compound plans to host Rhythm Sundays on the last Sunday of each month, with preparations already under way for the next showcase.
