Macka B, widely acknowledged as one of the UK’s most respected reggae voices, was asked to sing a song on the iconic Real Rock riddim, and he delivered a song that shows the depth of his understanding of the assignment.

The artiste recently linked up with one of reggae’s most enduring and respected rhythm sections, the Firehouse Crew, at Gusse Clarke’s Anchor Recording Studio in Kingston for the production of the song titled Di Real Rock. From the opening bars of the track, he rides the riddim with trademark precision and cultural depth.

Recorded nearly 60 years ago – in 1967 to be exact – at Studio One by Sound Dimension under Coxsone Dodd, Real Rock has been versioned hundreds of times – from Willie Williams’ Armageddon Time and Junior Murvin’s Cool Out Son through to Buju Banton, Barrington Levy, Beres Hammond, and beyond. Macka B name-checks them all with effortless flow, honouring the riddim’s history while stamping his own conscious signature on it. The result is a track that educates, celebrates, and moves with clarity and respect for the culture.

Cognisant of the riddim’s legacy, Macka B chose his lyrics well and takes listeners on a journey promoting healthy living, plant-based diets, and the benefits of natural remedies, all delivered with his signature charm and lyrical flair.

“Real Rock is one of the biggest riddims to ever come out of Jamaica. When Firehouse Crew called me to voice it, I knew I had to give the people the full history. This is not just a tune. It’s a lesson in where we come from and why the riddim still shakes the foundation today,” Macka B said.

Macka B, born Christopher MacFarlane in Wolverhampton to Jamaican parents, brings four decades of experience to the session. A pioneer of UK reggae and dancehall, he has shared stages with Burning Spear, U-Roy, The Wailers, Lee Perry, and Culture.

In recent years, his Medical Mondays and Wha Me Eat Wednesdays social series have introduced millions to ital living and plant-based wellness, proving his ability to connect traditional reggae values with modern platforms. Di Real Rock continues that thread: respectful of the culture, forward-looking in delivery.

The Firehouse Crew was formed in 1986 as the house band at King Tubby’s Firehouse studio. They became central to the 1990s roots reggae renaissance through their long-standing work with producer Philip ‘Fatis’ Burrell at Xterminator Records, laying the foundation for landmark recordings by Luciano, Sizzla, Ini Kamoze, Sanchez, and many others. Their precise, authentic musicianship remains a cornerstone of conscious reggae.
