Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport, Olivia Grange, has announced the calendar of national events and activities for Jamaica’s 64th anniversary of independence under the theme, ‘United in Celebrating Resilience’.
High on the list of events is the Jamaica Festival Song Competition, which is commemorating its 60th anniversary this year. The popular annual competition is under way with an engaging cohort of finalists vying for the coveted top spot.
Grange said the competition has endured because it unites Jamaicans through music and showcases the nation’s creative excellence.
“The Jamaica Festival Song Competition is one of our nation’s most treasured cultural activities. For 60 years, it has inspired patriotism, creativity and national pride, providing a platform for generations of Jamaican artistes to celebrate our identity through music,” said Grange.
She encouraged Jamaicans to support this year’s finalists by watching the televised programmes and voting for their favourite songs ahead of the results show on July 25.
Speaking on the significance of the theme, Grange explained, “This year’s theme speaks directly to who we are as a people. It reflects the strength, determination and unity that have defined the Jamaican spirit throughout our history and, most recently, in the face of the challenges brought by Hurricane Melissa. Many of our communities experienced significant disruption, destruction and even loss, yet, as we have done repeatedly, Jamaicans faced adversity with courage and the unwavering belief that this too shall pass.”
Grange noted that this year’s Independence celebrations represent more than commemorative events, describing them as an opportunity for Jamaicans to celebrate their shared resilience while looking confidently towards the future.
Activities throughout July will include the weekly televised Jamaica Gospel Star Competition, the Jamaica Festival Song Competition Results Show, the National Emancipation and Independence Thanksgiving Service at Olson Memorial Church of God in St Andrew on July 26, and the Seville Emancipation Jubilee at Seville Heritage Park in St Ann on July 31.
The celebrations will continue with Independence Village, which will transform the National Stadium Complex into Jamaica’s premier Independence hub from August 1 to 6.
The six-night programme will feature the Miss Jamaica Festival Queen Coronation Show (August 1), the Jamaica Gospel Star Grand Finale (August 2), Mello-Go-Roun’ (August 3), Independence Soul Tuesday, hosted by Shukkle Bus and produced by Romeich Entertainment (August 4), Bingo, Dominoes and Games Night (August 5), before culminating with the Independence Grand Gala at the National Stadium on August 6, alongside a watch party in Independence Village.
“These celebrations belong to all Jamaicans. We will be streaming the events live around the world, so whether you are here at home or representing our nation overseas, I invite you to be part of this special season. Come out with your families and friends, wear your black, green and gold proudly, support our outstanding performers, artisans and creatives, and celebrate the communities that continue to embody resilience, innovation and hope. Together, let us celebrate Jamaica 64, United in Celebrating Resilience, and confident in our future,” Grange said.
