A man had to have fly larvae physically removed from his eye

The 53-year-old had gone to a hospital in France complaining of irritation in his right eye that had persisted for several hours.

According to the New England Journal of Medicine, the man informed doctors that he had been gardening near a farm earlier that day when he felt something enter his eye.

Tests showed "more than a dozen mobile, translucent larvae" squirming around on his cornea - the outer covering at the front of the eye.

The flies were also discovered inside his conjunctiva, the membrane that lines the eyelid and white parts of the eye. Doctors were able to identify the creatures as sheep bot fly larvae and used forceps to physically remove them from the man's eye.

Thankfully, medics were able to get rid of all of the larvae and he went on to make a full recovery.
