Cuban ambassador here

THE first Cuban ambassador to Jamaica in eight years has presented his credentials here

Ambassador Dario de Urra presented his credentials to Senator David Coore, minister of foreign affairs and foreign trade, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade Tuesday, and yesterday to the governor general.

Ambassador de Urra will assume duties shortly and is the first ambassador appointed to Jamaica since Jamaica broke diplomatic ties with Cuba in 1982.

Ambassador de Urra is a resident ambassador, which means he will be stationed in Jamaica and the building previously used as the Cuban embassy, on Trafalgar Road, will resume its former function. The building is believed to require extensive repairs.

The arrival of the ambassador means the relations have again been established at the highest level, though fewer members of staff are expected to be at the Cuban mission here than in the 1970s when Cuba/Jamaica relations were at their greatest intensity and several activities of the Cubans, including an ambassador, offended several Jamaicans.
