Hundreds enter baby show
Nearly 600 babies competed in the fourth Mead Johnson Baby Show, held at Ardenne High School. The show, opened by Hon A. Russell Graham, custos of St Andrew, included an address on child care. Fourteen month-old Paul Bassell, son of Mr and Mrs Paul Bassell of 20 Range Crescent, Kingston 2, won the title.

Olac show at Ardenne
Fourteen month-old Paul Bassell, son of Mr and Mrs Paul Bassell, of 20 Range Crescent, Kingston 2, emerged 'Mr Olac 1964' from a line-up of nearly 600 babies who competed at the fourth Mead Johnson Baby Show held at Ardenne High School on Saturday.
The show was opened by the Hon A. Russell Graham, custos of St Andrew, who gave an address on the proper care of “the child”, and congratulated Mr Hugh Rose, district supervisor of Mead John Distributors, and his team, for “the good work” which they had been doing over the past four years.
Apart from the conveted title, Paul will be the recipient of three months’ supply each of Olac, Poly-Vi-Sol and Pablum Cereal, a lifetime 1½ × 14” hand coloured portrait, a special gift of £25 of Jamaican National Savings Bond, and a set of baby furniture.
Other prize-winners are in the six- to nine-month-old group, Carl Livingston (8½ months), son of Mrs Molly Livingston of 15 Grosvenor Terrace – 1; Shara Thomas (8½ months) – daughter of Mr and Mrs Lawton Thomas of 32 McArthur Avenue – 2, and Neil Ernandez (six months) – son of Mr and Mrs Neville Ermandez of 8 Beethoven Avenue.
In the 10-12 month old group, Diedre Lopez (12 months) – daughter of Mrs Mildred Lopez of 1 Friendship Park Avenue – 1 Miguel Mc-Kinney (10½ months) 2; and Ricardo Du Cille (12½ months) – son of Mr and Mrs Joseph Du Cille of 20 Colbeck Avenue, Pembroke Hall – 3.
First prize in the 13-15 month old group went to Stefan Kerry (14 months) – son of Mr and Mrs Lloyd Kerry; Sandra Lawrence (14½ months) – daughter of Mrs Yvonne Lawrence of 18 Hampton Green – 2, and Robert Lee (13½ months) of 8 Norward Road – 3.
In the 16-24 month old group, Karen McFarlane (23¾ months – daughter of Mr and Mrs Windal McFarlane of 10 Lincoln Avenue – 1; Ann Michele Taylor (17¼ months) – daughter of Mr and Mrs DudleyTaylor of 16 Tucker Avenue – 2; and Kaye Cunningham of 43 Three Views Avenue – 3; Ernest Berry, 32-month-old son of Mr and Mrs Ernest Berry of 16 Livingstone Crescent, came first in his group of 24-36 month old.
All the first-prize winners were given three months’ supply of Olac, while the second- and third-prize winners received two months’ and one month’s supply of the baby food, respectively. They will also get their portraits, 8” × 10”, hand coloured in black and white.
After the distribution of prizes, Mr Rose presented the Hon Russell Graham and Mrs Graham with a packet of 300 cans of Olac liquid for the Home for the Mentally Handicapped Children.
Among the doctors present were Dr M. Beaubrun, Dr B. Johnson, Dr A.F. Brown, Dr J.C. Carberry, Dr C. Haynes, Dr K. McKenzie, Dr Joyce Tate, Dr E. Thomas and Dr R. Ramsay, who gave a report on the judging of the babies.
The Alpha schoolboy band provided entertainment by rendering some lively ‘Ska’ music.
