St. Hugh’s Prep clinches 7th Art Shield victory

St. Hugh’s Preparatory School has once again captured the Wilson James Shield for Art, securing their seventh win in the annual Preparatory Schools’ Art Competition. Their entry, praised for its originality and creativity, topped submissions from three other schools at the Institute of Jamaica exhibition.

Art Shield Presented to St. Hugh’s Prep

St. Hugh’s Preparatory School was awarded the Wilson James Shield for Art yesterday at the Institute of Jamaica, marking their seventh win in the Preparatory Schools’ Art Competition, which has been run annually since 1962.


Entries in this year’s competition were mounted in an exhibition that opened at the Institute of Jamaica on May 21.


Dr. Karl Wilson James, President of the Scouts Association of Jamaica and donor of the shield, was on hand yesterday to make the presentation. Receiving on behalf of St. Hugh’s were students Stephen Black and Jean-Marie Ramsay. St. Hugh’s emerged the winner from a field of four contestants, with their entry judged the best for its originality and creativity. The other entrants were Immaculate Conception, Mona, and Our Lady of the Angels Preparatory Schools.


Judges were Mrs. Carmen Verity, Supervisor of the Junior Centre of the Institute, and Mr. Harry Jutan, Education Officer from the Ministry of Education.
Along with the shield, the winners received a prize of books, and second- and third-place prizes of books were also presented to Immaculate Conception and Our Lady of the Angels, respectively. The books were also donated by Dr. Wilson James.
The exhibition closed on Friday after a twelve-day run.
