Jamaicans pay tribute to Sir Alexander
Jamaica’s only living National Hero, the Rt. Excellent Sir Alexander Bustamante and Lady Bustamante were honoured on Monday night at a reception sponsored by the Thursday Club of Young Jamaica and held on the lawns of the Courtleigh Manor Hotel.
In an atmosphere of gaiety, with background music provided by the Jamaica Military Band under the direction of Mr. Joe Williams and popular local singing star Ernie Smith, a large cross-section of the Jamaican community turned up to pay tribute to Sir Alexander.
Coloured lights flickered across the lawn, and with the attractive colours of the ladies’ dresses, they added a touch of sparkle to the occasion. Guests moved freely around, greeting Sir Alexander and Lady Bustamante.
Sir Alexander, who maintained high spirits throughout the night, greeted guests with affectionate embraces. It was kisses from the women and warm and hearty handshakes for the men.
As the function came to an end, a basket of flowers was presented to Lady Bustamante by Mrs. Peter Rickards, wife of the chairman of the Thursday Club of Young Jamaica. As the honoured guests were leaving, the large gathering sang “For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow” and gave them three cheers.
