From food festivals to new restaurants, 2022 was a big year for food as establishments shook off the COVID-19 malaise and served up award-winning offerings. Here are your Top 22 Food stories in 2022.

1. Mother-son duo Venice and Jasir Simpson awarded for Jamaican Ginger Lemonade in Alaska

Venice Thomas Simpson, who resides in Alaska, knew she was on to something special when others not only loved her homemade drink, but encouraged her to sell the tasty beverage as well. It wasn’t, however, until her child spoke of his desire to assist the homeless that the mother-son duo decided to go into business, creating their very own Jamaican ginger lemonade. In 2022, the pair won the New Business of the Year Award from the Anchorage Community Land Trust, a non-profit organisation which helps minority groups.

2. From jerk chicken to cow foot – Elaine and Derron Herah’s Coded Frolic focuses on versatility

Coded Frolic, the eatery owned by the fastest woman alive, Elaine Thompson Herah, and her husband, Derron, prides itself on variety and versatility. They offer over 13 types of jerk, ranging from goat, rabbit, bird and oxtail to cow foot and seafood.

Deidre Coleman and Patrice Gilman were raised on authentic spices and rich flavour and they are bringing this first-rate flavour to Winnipeg, Canada, with Gladys Caribbean Kitchen, the restaurant named for their grandmothers, who both share the first name, Gladys.

Waah Gwaan Cafe aims to deliver an authentic Jamaican experience, with international flair and does just that with options such as the wanga gut burger, French toast sandwich, omelette burger, tuna melt panini, cheesesteak sandwich and smoked marlin bagel.

A Jamaican food segment on PIX 11 warmed the hearts of tri-state residents last Valentine’s Day with a dazzling array of romantic food and beverage selections inspired by Jamaican food stylist, Ann Marie Senior. Among the dishes on display were Cornish hen stuffed with wild rice and peas; spicy lamb chops smothered in Manchester mint; jerked whole lobsters and turn cornmeal, cooked with coconut milk and roasted pumpkin. On the beverage side, the presentation table showcased Grace Tropical Rhythms, coconut water and the Joy Spence-curated eight-year-old Appleton rum.
