The Ton Meets Tiers: Bridgerton-themed cake gala set for May 3
There’s a fine line between cake and art, and for many, that line has already blurred. From intricate techniques to bold creativity, skilled bakers transform sugar, spice, and everything nice into edible masterpieces bursting with flavour. On May 3, elegance and indulgence will merge once again for the second staging of Taste of Art: The Exhibition.
For Suelan Chung-Evans, CEO of Sugabuzz Desserts and the visionary behind the event, there’s no distinction to be made; for her, cake has always been, and will always be, art in delicious motion.
“The event was designed to highlight the intricate artistic element that goes into cake design. We wanted to see how it would go, and people loved the staging of the event in 2024. It was new, different, and it highlighted dessert in such a unique fashion. Artists were able to showcase their pieces and share the fascinating stories behind their themes. So, we decided to make it an annual affair,” Chung-Evans told Food.
With black tie reigning supreme last year for the first-ever event of this sweet nature, cake connoisseurs are invited this time around to roll out in flowing skirts and tailcoats for the regency-era function.
“Persons may think that when you go to an art exhibition, it’s about folks walking around, drinking some wine and socialising. But we want to add a little fun to it. The theme doesn’t have to be in the whole outfit. You could wear gloves or a fascinator, just to make the look a bit more interesting,” she revealed.
CAKE ARTISANS
This Bridgerton theme, Chung-Evans went on to explain, will not only be reflected in the gala’s sophisticated attire. But also in the gastronomic gateaux gallery experience set to feature 12 visionary cake artisans.
“So far, exhibitors such as Bowl N batter, Cake Away, Cakes by Queata, Cake Couture JA, Iris Griffiths Cakes, Lola’s Desserts, Orange Peel Caterers, The Cookie Studio JA, Suga Mama Cakes JM, Sweet Lady Cakes JA and Sugabuzz Desserts have signed up to master this thrilling Bridgerton challenge. And all of these positively sweet cake pieces will be showcased throughout the pastry ball,” she confirmed.
Planning the event has proven to be easier said than done this time around for the entrepreneur because of her burning desire to top the fabulousness of last year. “Also, we were hoping to get more monetary sponsorships to help with the event. But we are very grateful to Artsy Cake Supplies, P.A. Benjamin, Cenitech Engineering Solutions Limited, Commercial Associates Limited, D-Essential Systems, Events By Jesse’s, First In Line JA, Occasions Catering, Orange Peel Caterers, Orbit 360, Teino Evans Media and Wonga Media for jumping onboard and showing their support,” she added. Her dream sponsors would include wine and décor offerings.
The hope is to incorporate edible centrepieces that will fit into the display and décor. For those who are looking to join the sweet ton and experience this exquisite taste of art for the first time, expect to see the theme come to life in the most festive manner.
“We anticipate this edible art showcase to be moving, in more ways than one. And we hope our guests will also enjoy the complimentary hors d’oeuvres and wines available.”
Taste of Art: The Exhibition will take place at The Summit Kingston, from 6 to 10 p.m. Tickets are available online at First In Line JA and at Jesse’s Gifts & Décor and Artsy Cake Supplies.
