UWI students making sanitiser for virus fight

Doctor of Pharmacy students at The University of the West Indies have been producing hand sanitisers on the campus for local distribution in an effort to beat the COVID-19 pandemic now affecting the island.

The students are producing the sanitisers with the help of the National Health Fund.

Sanitisers have been scarce commodity since the COVID-19 outbreak as consumers rush to stock up on quantities.

Health experts say the best way to prevent the spread of infections and decrease the risk of getting sick is by washing hands with plain soap and water.

However, they say if soap and water are not available, CDC recommends consumers use an alcohol-based hand sanitiser that contains at least 60% alcohol.

A similar exercise was undertaken by the students at the Faculty of Science and Technology at The UWI who put their training into practice and produced the much-needed cleaning agent.
