The first part of a major highway project linking Georgetown, Guyana, to Brazil is providing tremendous opportunities in terms of opening up the hemispheric corridor of South America, according to Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) President Dr Gene Leon.

The total amount allocated to the project is just under US$200 million.

One of the largest road infrastructure investment opportunities in Guyana, funded jointly by the CDB and the United Kingdom, through its UK Caribbean Investment Fund, the project spans more than 100 kilometres of roadway from Linden to Mabura.

The road will also open up opportunities for increased agricultural production and tourism.

Leon told The Gleaner in a recent interview that the CDB was also looking at several water projects in the South American country.

The CDB is also assisting Guyana with a food-security initiative aimed at reducing imports by 25 per cent by 2025. The project is also a broader Caribbean Community plan to address food security across the region.
