Hours after letter of hope issued, Baby Kiano dies
After suffering multiple heart failures on Monday and Tuesday, three-month-old Kiano Chance has died at Bustamante Hospital for Children in St Andrew.
Since his birth on July 15, Baby Kiano was suspected of battling numerous illnesses which relatives said have not been definitively diagnosed.
His mother, Tashoy James, told The Gleaner that he was pronounced dead at 2:05 Tuesday afternoon.
She has been left devastated by the passing of her only child.
“His heart had failed, but they resuscitated him, and then couple minutes after, it happened again, and they were unable to [save him],” she said.
On Tuesday morning, James said that though Kiano continued to be in need of oxygen, he had been doing “a little better”.
The child’s relatives had been pleading for a referral letter from the paediatric institution to share with a children’s hospital in Miami, Florida, so that he could be admitted.
They only received the correspondence late on Monday.
The letter was crucial for an interview at the United States Embassy in Liguanea, St Andrew, which they had hoped to visit on Tuesday.
Because the letter was only received on Monday, it would have been impossible to send it to the Miami-based hospital in time in order to receive a response, which the parents would have needed for the visa interview.
