WESTERN BUREAU:

The Hanover police division and the wider Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) are in mourning following the death of Constable Alfrado Newman, who succumbed to injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident on the outskirts of Montego Bay, St James, yesterday.

Constable Newman, stationed at the Sandy Bay Police Station, was on his way to work, riding his personal motorcycle, when he collided with a motor car along the Unity Hall main road at approximately 8:25 a.m.

He was transported to Cornwall Regional Hospital in serious condition but passed away at around 1:00 p.m. despite the medical staff's best efforts.

Witnesses reported that the taxi operator drove out of a side road onto the main road, directly into the path of Newman's motorcycle, causing him to slam into one of the vehicle's doors.

Superintendent Andrew Nish, commander for Hanover, expressed the profound impact of Newman's death on his colleagues and the community.

"This is a sad time for the police in Hanover and the wider community. Constable Newman was well-loved and respected by all. He was always neat and well-put together, and the way he carried himself attracted people to him," said Nish.

Efforts are being made to locate Newman's mother and sister, who are currently overseas.

The JCF has expressed condolences to Newman's family, friends, and colleagues via social media.

"The Jamaica Constabulary Force is expressing condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of Constable Newman, who was assigned to the Hanover Police Division. The Force’s Chaplaincy Branch and Welfare Department are providing support to his loved ones," stated the JCF.
