‘Stand up and shout out’
Golding glad for support of ‘well-thinking Jamaicans and organisations’ in stance against Chung’s FID appointment
President of the People’s National Party (PNP) Mark Golding has slammed the Andrew Holness-led administration, accusing it of repeatedly breaching the principles required to govern Jamaica.
Golding was speaking yesterday to a large crowd of orange-clad supporters at Old Harbour Square during the PNP’s second protest action in recent weeks, aimed at demanding greater government accountability and objecting to the appointment of Dennis Chung as chief technical director of the Financial Investigations Division (FID).
“The most recent is the attempt to subvert the true process of the Financial Investigations Division and its true purpose by appointing to head it as the chief technical director, somebody who is not qualified for the position because he has no law-enforcement experience; no experience in investigating financial crimes, which is the very heart of the purpose of that agency,” Golding declared.
He also accused Chung of displaying bias in the division’s most critical probe to date.
“Chung [has] compromised himself by showing clear and manifest bias in the most important investigation that the FID is asked to deliver on, which is the investigation of allegations of illicit enrichment and corruption by the prime minister of Jamaica,” Golding charged.
“This is why we have to take a strong stance against it, and we are very glad that we are not alone in this stance, and that well-thinking Jamaicans and organisations, including non-political bodies, have seen it fit to stand up and shout out against this absolute aberration in the governance of the country,” he added.
Golding emphasised that the issue has national importance, stating, “.... this matters, because the country needs all the resources that can be mustered to make life better for the people of Jamaica”.
He vowed that the Opposition would continue to apply pressure until the Government reverses its decision.
Other speakers at the protest were Opposition Spokesman on National Security Peter Bunting, General Secretary Dr Dayton Campbell, Opposition Spokesman on Finance Julian Robinson, and councillor for the Old Harbour Division Dr Kurt Waul, who will contest the St Catherine South Western constituency in the upcoming general election.
