Plans in high gear for CARICOM Heads meeting tomorrow
A special invitation has been extended to members of the Upper House to the 49th meeting of the CARICOM Heads of Government between July 6 and 8 in Montego Bay, St James.
Senator Kamina Johnson Smith, minister of foreign affairs and foreign trade minister, who extended the invitation to her colleagues yesterday during what could be the final sitting of the Senate for the parliamentary term, also wished lawmakers a Happy CARICOM Day.
Johnson Smith said delegations from the region are expected to arrive in the country on Friday and Saturday for the 49th Regular Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government which begins tomorrow.
Jamaica took the chairmanship of the regional body on July 1 and will lead the dialogue by member states under the theme ‘People, Partnerships, Prosperity: Promoting a Secure and Sustainable Future’.
The government news agency reported that among the matters to be discussed in closed sessions are the implementation of the CARICOM Single Market and Economy, climate change and climate financing, food and nutrition security, regional security issues. The security crisis in Haiti will also be on the agenda while regional approaches to transportation, education, digitalisation, telecommunications, population issues and education transformation will also be discussed.
The key outcomes of the 49th Regular Meeting will be presented during a press conference at the end of the closed sessions.
Meanwhile, Justice Winston Anderson will be sworn in as the fourth president of the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) on Sunday, during the 49th Regular Meeting, by Governor General Sir Patrick Allen.
The ceremony will feature remarks by Sir Patrick, Prime Minister Dr Andrew Holness; outgoing president of the CCJ Justice Adrian Saunders, among other officials from the region.
