The Gleaner’s Sashana Small walked away with three major awards last night at the Caribbean Broadcasting Union’s (CBU) 36th Media Awards Gala in Barbados.

The awards culminated the CBU’s 56th Annual General Assembly, held from August 18-20 under the theme ‘Caribbean Media and the Orange Economy’.

Small won in the categories of Health Education Journalism; Excellence in Media Coverage of Caribbean Arts and Culture; and Coverage of Healthy Nutrition Food Policy.

Speaking with The Gleaner after the awards ceremony last night, she said she felt honoured to be recognised for her work at the regional level.

“Journalism is my passion, and I appreciate the role that I have in telling important and credible stories, especially now as media is undergoing so many changes,” Small said.

She added that she appreciated that the CBU Awards cover issues related to health, education and arts and culture - subjects she believes highlight Jamaica’s successes, while also calling attention to areas that require work.

“I’m grateful to my editors for their guidance, my colleagues who inspire me daily, and my family and friends for always believing in me. I’m looking forward to continuing the work,” Small said.

The Gleaner’s Andre Williams won the People’s Choice Award for news and current affairs for his coverage of Hurricane Beryl, while The Gleaner’s Tanesha Mundle received special mention in the Entertainment News Item category.

Among of other members of the RJRGLEANER Communications Group who took home awards were Racquel Porter for Best Radio News; Kemon White, for Excellence in Media Coverage of Arts and Culture; the All Angles team for Best Documentary Programme and Romardo Lyons, Ivan Shaw and Uton West for Excellence in Environmental Reporting.
