Toll rates still too high

Although we must commend our new prime minister for having persuaded China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC) to reduce the rates by 25 per cent for the new toll road, it should be obvious to CHEC that it is still much too expensive for the vast majority of Jamaicans, and it will attract limited traffic.
What one must wonder is why CHEC isn't interested in having anyone use its new highway. By charging lower rates and increasing volume, the company would certainly make more money. Is it because of the 1,200 acres the Chinese have received or other compensation negotiated with the previous Government that we know nothing about, or does the company simply not care?
