Demanding our degrees from MoBay Community College
THE EDITOR, Sir:
Imagine completing your bachelor's degree with the hope of pursuing better opportunities, only to be denied your documentation at the end of the programme for more than a year. This is the dilemma I, along with the other students of the Montego Bay Community College graduating class of 2013-2017, am facing.
I have successfully completed the required number of courses and also fulfilled my financial obligations to the college. However, it has been one year since and I still haven't received any explanation for the delay, nor can they provide a time frame in which we will be awarded our degrees.
The college further adds to my distress by requesting a fee to provide proof, in the form of a letter, that I have completed my studies each time I seek out new opportunities that require proof of qualification. It is not practical, nor is it affordable, to be purchasing this letter each time, knowing I have already paid thousands of dollars in order to be able to carry out the programme.
This is very unacceptable and I would like the Council of Community Colleges of Jamaica to provide us with information and some insight as to what is happening regarding our degrees. I was told that the organisation does not speak directly to students, and the representatives at the college are not providing us with the information we seek. They are very uninterested and act as if we are bothering them each time we visit the institution to get some answers.
We need our degrees.
