Readers’ reactions – Parish status for Portmore?

Published:Friday | December 18, 2020 | 12:10 AM

Representatives of the opposition People’s National Party on Wednesday questioned what benefits Portmore would receive as a parish that it is not getting currently, as a joint select committee held its first sitting to review the proposal for the municipality to become the country’s 15th parish. Some readers’ reactions via Gleaner’s social media pages.

Before giving it parish status, I’d first love to see a hospital and a market built there, but more importantly, the hospital.

Why waste time with parish status, they should first put the necessary infrastructure, e.g., hospital, fire station, improved roadways etc.

What’s there to benefit for Portmore? There are far more mission critical objectives to be accomplished in Jamaica.

– @Michael Monad

If the designation as a parish will provide no additional benefits, then these people are wasting time, this committee could be exploring ways to curb the crime and violence in the country. Fitz has a point though, what will change?

– @Sonji Johnson

Portmore should be the third city, not a parish.

– @Peter Hunter

This would provide a focus for targeted improvements to the economy and educational system for one thing ... .

Unu nuh have nothing else to do?? Why make it another parish??

– @thewalkingcomeup_

The focus should be on trying to build a hospital in Portmore. That is what is needed.

All this fuss about Portmore becoming a parish, can y’all deal with the crime taking place over there? Where is going to be the capital? And what about the traffic, what unnu plan to do about that? When rain drizzles, certain communities flood, people have to stay a road till water runs off, what about proper drainage? The smell-bad fogging a stress them out, especially those with respiratory illnesses. What unnu doing about mosquitoes otherwise, and not to mention unnu expensive toll that commuters who work in Kingston have to pay to go to them work and pay to go home reducing their ability to provide decent meals for their families, so much ills and the representatives only care if it becomes a parish or not ah boi ... .
