Teachers are despondent

THE EDITOR, Madam:

Many teachers are on the brink of total devastation due to the lack of love some have been facing as a result of the pandemic. Teachers are faced with the formidable task of instructing youngsters in these challenging times. Are the goals of the Ministry of Education realistic? We are a third- world country who they want to perform as a first-world country without the requisite resources. When we fail the ministry is so harsh on the teachers and the general public as well. One has to be mindful of the low remunerations which have been accrued by the teachers in the so-called noble profession. Some teachers whenever they fall ill, they are left to the mercy of the public. GoFundMe is the ultimate choice to save the skin of these public servants to help teachers into serious health crises.

Online learning is placing a strain on the system and lack of resources playing a negative role in the dissemination of knowledge. Schoolchildren are disinterested in schoolwork and subsequently, it is a real-life challenge to those who are trying vehemently to discharge their duties as teachers. I don’t know how long this reign of terror will last but teachers are despondent and disoriented by the current impasse.

Most children are shying from online classes, and if they do present themselves the economic situations which the lockdowns have created are not making things better. Many schools still have nothing much to work with because they are not name-brand schools. The playing field needs to be levelled to make a compromise for less productive schools and schools in remote districts.
