Harsher sentence for rapists
THE EDITOR, Madam:
Disgust, injustice, and abuse of authority are the emotions that come to my mind when I think of this “father” from Clarendon who committed rape and incest. How can a father even sit and ponder about the acts of a man and woman relationship, and then abuse his own daughter? It further sickens and pains my heart to have heard that his sentence was reduced 15 years by the court of appeal!
This man committed a heinous crime, and he deserves to pay the time. In my opinion, alleviating his sentence was not the right thing to do because he may commit similar crime again. If that happens, it could be more ghastly and severe.
This man’s crime was premeditated. He intentionally took his daughter from her grandmother and raped her. He reportedly “threatened to kill her if she told anyone”... How disgusting and unnerving this is. I commend that young lady for not allowing him to silence her, because I believe that if she had stayed silent, he would have continued to abuse her.
Jamaica’s justice system needs to implement harsher punishment for crimes of a high degree. I strongly believe that this man’s crime was of the said eminence. What is the guarantee that he will not try this again, and this time it could be someone else’s child? A father is a man that has a relation to his child or children. How will our young boys and men know that the act of incest, let alone rape, is unacceptable and intolerable? Young ladies need to speak up and let their voices heard.
