Restore the colour of the Jamaican flag

THE EDITOR, Madam:

I vividly recall that about this time 60 years ago, Jamaica was getting all excited in anticipation of the coming Independence. I recall when the National Anthem was finally chosen and the rush to get the words and music to the schools for the children to practise for the different activities they would eventually become involved in.

One activity that was longingly awaited was for the new flag, which would replace the old Union Jack. When it finally arrived, the colours were black, green and gold.

When did we change the gold to some other shade of yellow? The flag that is popularly displayed now at sporting and other events is not the true flag, so whoever is in charge, please restore the gold.

I also remember the clean-up and paint-up campaign in all parish capitals, and our capital city could well do with such an activity. Time is running out, as it will soon be August 6.

While we are at it, Spanish Town Square in one of the most historic cities in the hemisphere, but is slowly being allowed to become like one of the lost cities we read about in the Bible. Old San Juan and Old Havana have been restored and are making money from tourism, so why not Spanish Town?

Old King’s House could be restored and used as some historic museum or government office; the same with the old courthouse and other historic buildings. I am sure that if we have the will we can find a way.
