Letter of the Day | Garbage collection in St Thomas is a mess
THE EDITOR, Madam:
I am writing to express my concern about garbage collection in the parish of St Thomas. What we have been experiencing as citizens is non-collection of garbage for two to three months at a time. This is completely unacceptable.
We are all aware that timely collection of garbage is important to prevent a public health crisis. Unfortunately, we have to be living with the breeding of maggots, which eventually mature into flies, and citizens should never be subjected to live under conditions like these.
Whenever questions are raised pertaining to garbage collection, we are told that there is a shortage of trucks. However, it would appear as though no effort is being made to correct the issue, since irrespective of how hard residents lobby for our garbage to be collected, the issue remains the same: smelly communities, maggots, garbage pile-ups, and absolutely no garbage collection.
I would like to ask the responsible personnel to look into this matter and take action. We need garbage trucks in our communities on a regular basis, so that we can dispose of our garbage safely, and in a responsible manner, as well as reduce the breeding of rodents, cockroaches and flies, which can lead to serious public health problems.
