Disorderly males creating chaos
THE EDITOR, Madam:
The overt indiscipline, disrespect, disregard, and aggression in Jamaica’s public spaces, particularly on the streets, is fuelled primarily by the arrogance of Jamaican males.
Is it any wonder that male motorists, on a daily basis, selfishly ‘bad drive’, unabashedly break road rules; and male pedestrians in particular cross the streets recklessly and impatiently. They have scant regard for approaching traffic and their fellow pedestrians. The ‘robot taxi’ drivers stop suddenly and with no warning in the direct path of motorists behind them in order to let off or pick up their passengers.
Is it any wonder that Jamaican women outlive their male counterparts? Whenever ‘motor cars for sale’ advertisements are published in The Gleaner classifieds, they include the phrase ‘lady-driven’. Such ads attract more interest and, by extension, more potential buyers than ads that don’t include those two ‘magical words’. Why is that so? This is because, as I am sure motor vehicle insurance companies will attest, female drivers are far more cautious, responsible, obedient to road rules and regulations. They are far less reckless and accident-prone than their male counterparts.
Last, unless the arrogant behaviour exhibited by many Jamaican males in public spaces is significantly reduced, Jamaica does not deserve to be called and/or classified as a civil society.
