Hip Strip transformation long overdue

THE EDITOR, Sir:

It is welcome news that the Tourism Enhancement Fund will begin a massive transformation of MoBay’s Hip Strip, costing $1 billion, beginning in April 2023. This is long overdue and the development will enhance the area, making it more attractive and appealing to visitors and locals alike.

Recently, I read a comment online from a visitor saying that she found the strip extremely dull, boring and overrated; she added that she would not return to MoBay. I agree; the area has so much potential.

I recall many years ago, when the strip was ‘hip’, vibrant and fun-people made the difference. Now the strip is mostly a thoroughfare, with overzealous vendors trying to lure the few visitors walking by into stores to shop.

There needs to be more leisure businesses and casual outdoor spaces, cafés, etc. A vacation is about the experience, exploring, dining, enjoying; the focus should not be entirely shopping. In popular destinations, tourists enjoy areas they can leisurely walk about without fear or hassle. This is the best way to get them to spend.

The development plans announced recently include making the area more green, diversifying business and entertainment options and widening the sidewalk, which would make it more pedestrian friendly. We need to get more people on the strip, out and about, day and night.

Physically, the strip is perfectly located on the coast with picturesque scenery leading to the Harmony Park. I think if there were more options on the strip, more people would enjoy it. This would enhance tourism and boost revenues.

The proposed monthly reggae shows at the Park is another great idea. Hopefully, they could look at making this weekly on Friday nights.

The plans sound exciting and we look forward to the transformation!
