Men need to learn to love themselves

THE EDITOR, Madam:

I am writing this letter for the gentlemen. There is nothing wrong with not having a Valentine this Valentine’s Day. In fact, there is a Valentine that you should be in love with every day – yourself. A lot of guys tend to lose their marbles and sense of reality when they get rejected or cannot contain a hornet’s nest, because they depend on that validation and emotional security from their partner, and that is not guaranteed nowadays. Unfortunately, mental health and toxic and unreasonable behaviour towards males are still a taboo, and sometimes the only option they have is to self-destruct and call it a day.

It’s also unfortunate but not surprising that nice guys finish last and the bad boys ‘get-through’ without a hassle, which is why a lot of nice guys become bad boys.

Only women, children and dogs are loved unconditionally. Men are loved under the condition that they provide something. Before you test the waters gentlemen, love yourself. If you don’t love yourself, you can’t love any lady. In an instance where things go south, you can always return to your peace of mind and find solitude within before you decide to go fishing again.

Focus on yourself, invest in yourself, be your best self and love yourself unconditionally first, such that any other ‘niceness’ from whomever is extra. Oh, and continue being nice guys, sometimes the universe saves the best for last.
