Richard Albert should step aside

THE EDITOR, Madam:

Leading up to the 2016 general election then Opposition Leader Andrew Holness promised that constitutional reform will be a major agenda item. In the 2020 general election, he asked for more time to get things done. Now, a Constitutional Reform Committee has been established, which is welcome.

The 14-member committee is a good exception for some appointments. Canadian Richard Albert should not be on the constitutional committee.

Even though I am a conservative, I don’t have any issues with the professor’s leaning towards the LGBTQ community and his views on abortion.

I recommend Professor Stephen Vasciannie to be appointed to the committee. He’s not only a legal expert and an educator but he’s well versed in international affairs. He was Jamaica’s ambassador to the United States and also to the Organization of American States. A positive for Prof Vasciannie is that he was a founding member of the National Democratic Movement which was known for its constitutional reform stance. He was a policy analyst for that party.

Prof Albert can still assist Jamaica in other ways . As long as he’s there, he will be a distraction and even be blamed if issues are introduced that the public doesn’t agree with.
