Work together for a better Jamaica

THE EDITOR, Madam:

Today I am a proud Jamaican, because I am privileged to enjoy another year of my country’s Independence. Of course, there are struggles, and that is all right, because we have equally many victories, too; all countries go through those; however, it is how we navigate which make us great.

As we celebrate 61 years of Independence, we must look at what freedom means to us and whether we are truly independent. Independence speaks to freedom from control, influence, support, aid and the like. As Jamaicans, can we vehemently attest yes to Independence?

The mayhem on the streets by motorists, especially the bikers, needs to be addressed. The lack of accountability needs to be addressed, too, not only in the Government or the Opposition, but in leadership of all entities – whether in communities or churches, or even in families.

Jamaicans, both at home and in the diaspora, should reshape our thinking and never forget the struggles our ancestors went through to gain freedom. Jamaicans are little but tallawah – not afraid to work and shine.

We have lost focus along the journey but never lost our shine. Let us use this new year of celebrating our Independence for a new beginning. We need to take back control of our communities from the crime and violence that we are presently experiencing. It can be done, and must be done, though it will not be easy; but it is attainable.

We have a right to enjoy our land of wood and water, we have come thus far. We are no more little ‘yute’, not 22, but 61; we should always remember that we are a great nation with industrious people.
