THE EDITOR, Madam:

The letter headlined “What now, Prime Minister?” was an interesting one which has compelled me to respond. The letter writer wrote about the tribute articulated by PM Andrew Holness at Usain Bolt’s father’s funeral and thanksgiving service:“But despite the beauty and reverence of the occasion, one moment left a sour taste in my mouth – the tribute offered by Prime Minister Andrew Holness.

“His words were smooth, eloquent even, as he praised Bolt as a “national hero” and a beacon of Jamaican pride. But how quickly words can ring hollow when they are not matched by action. In the aftermath of the Stocks and Securities Limited (SSL) scandal – a shameful and deeply criminal act – the prime minister’s praise now feels like empty rhetoric. Because while the Government publicly honours Usain, the same government has failed to adequately protect or recover what was stolen from him: his hard-earned money”.

It is a disgrace that Bolt had his monies stolen and to date has not received back his funds. PM Holness gave a tribute at the service for Bolt’s father yet his administration has not taken any action to ensure that Bolt receives his funds. What action is the prime minister taking to allow and facilitate the return of Bolt’s monies? The Government should also take the blame for allowing the reckless conduct of SSL over many years

Usain Bolt is the world’s most accomplished, widely respected and admired athlete. We must not forgot Usain Bolt’s enormous contribution to this country within the sporting field and he should be respected by PM Holness. Bolt needs his stolen monies back and action is required in this regard by PM Holness as head of the Government. Usain Bolt must be refunded every single dollar which he deposited at SSL and the PM Holness must ensure that this is expeditiously done. Bolt is a hero in this country and should be treated with the respect he so eminently deserves. Also, audit and investigative report which was conducted at SSL and the findings therein should be made public.
