Install speed governors in public passenger vehicles

THE EDITOR, Madam:

I am writing a follow up to my earlier letter that was published in The Gleaner. In that letter, which was based around some pertinent issues raised by Dr Garth Rattray in his column, I recommended that the agencies responsible for the public transportation to put measures in place to train taxi operators.

Further, I am suggesting that, as an interim measure, the Government should consider that all public passenger vehicles be fitted with speed governors. These devices can be programmed for the vehicles not to go over 60 kilometres per hour within city limits, and 80 kilometres per hour on the highways.

This will ensure that operators of these public passenger vehicles drive within an established safe speed limit. While this may not the only solution to reckless driving on the roads, which result in accidents, but will go some distance to save lives and ensure that there is some discipline on the roads.
