Are people being encouraged to dump and burn garbage?

Published:Monday | June 23, 2025 | 12:06 AM

THE EDITOR, Madam:

Despite the hoopla from the current administration about the acquisition of more and more garbage trucks, collection of refuse in the Belvedere, Happy Grove, Mount Royal and Plantation Heights areas of Red Hills, St Andrew, continues to be scandalous.

Householders have been suffering from inconsistent garbage collection for years. Up to Wednesday, June 18, residents of my road have not seen a garbage truck for more than two and a half weeks. Bins are overflowing.

The matter has been brought to the attention of Audley Gordon, the executive director of the National Solid Waste Management Authority, but he appears to be impotent in addressing the matter.

There are acres and acres of bush in the area. Perhaps the Government is implicitly encouraging us to dump and burn our garbage. After all, there is no apparent value in paying property taxes and being a law-abiding citizen.

I am getting my matches ready.
