Relook at Jamaican Maslow Hierarchy of needs

THE EDITOR, Madam:

An assessment of the current CSEC performance by subjects shows a remarkable and stunning revelation. The subjects in which the Jamaican students excel is an excellent profile of resilience. If percentages are the grid of competence, there is a 99 per cent success rate for those who studied agricultural science. Hurray to our farmers! “Ah dem ackee, banana, breadfruit, pear, melon, pineapple etc. ah hol wi up!”

Other winners are physical education and sport, 96 per cent theatre arts, 92 per cent food, nutrition and health 93 per cent and principles of business 90 per cent. Obviously, English and Maths are quite obsolete as the measure of communication success in theatre arts and principles of business show high levels of technology adaptation of the basic three R’s. The concepts of language, expression and practical application of mathematical principles have been captured. Our taxi operators do the maths every day with time/distance how much money to make equations.

The profile shows the high priorities of the real winners in life and how we truly thrive! A practical and pragmatic execution is the driving force.

Congratulations to our students! Education investors are sure to have dividends with capital investment in those growth areas. That’s what we ‘handle’ with greatest skill.

We apply science to grow our food. This shows patience and understanding of nature and our environment. We are able to prepare our own meals, keeping healthy and strong. We are physically competent and competitive in all sport. We also know to entertain and keep ourselves happy and run ‘business’. Way to go, tactile learners – Jamaican Maslow Hierarchy of Needs has to be relooked.
