Lack of road signs at Marshall’s Pen turn-off causing fatalities

THE EDITOR, Madam:

Roads can be seen as the unsung heroes of civilisation serving as vital connections that unify communities. When properly maintained, they act as catalysts for economic growth, reducing travel time and cost and preventing accidents and fatalities. Indeed, roads are the true champions of progress.

Consequently,it is important that the roadways in Jamaica be properly maintained and equipped with appropriate signage to guide motorists and decrease confusion and road fatalities. As a Christian country, we are well aware that God, who is our source of inspiration, is NOT the author of confusion!

I am referring particularly to the recently implemented one-way system in Mandeville. I am of the belief that effective road signs should be erected to assist drivers in comfortably navigating the town, especially those who are unfamiliar with the area.

In addition to this, there is the long-standing issue of the mayhem which often occurs at the turn-offs from Marshall’s Penn and Mike Town onto the highway. This area has experienced numerous fatalities as drivers exiting these turn-offs often struggle to merge safely onto the highway due to the high speed of oncoming traffic from both directions. How many more lives must be lost before this critical issue is addressed? This pressing concern has persisted for far too long and demands immediate attention! I am both appalled and astonished at the blatant disregard for the safety of our motorists and pedestrians!

I am hereby appealing to the Mayor of Mandeville to adopt a collaborative approach which involves all relevant authorities in addressing these issues. I am confident that with his input, we can ensure that our roads are not only safe but also efficient and user-friendly. The road lady has already done her part.
