Letter of the Day | Schools must affirm students’ identities, not diminish them
THE EDITOR, Madam:
I write as a concerned student to shed light on a troubling incident involving a peer and a school administrator.
During a recent interaction, the administrator made disparaging remarks about the student’s natural hair, describing it as “nappy” and suggesting it looked unkempt. She further stated that the hairstyle did not appear “proper” or “fit the uniform.” These comments were directed at a student who has consistently worn her hair in an afro — a style previously praised by teachers for embracing cultural heritage.
The timing of this incident was especially painful, as it occurred during a week dedicated to celebrating national identity and African roots. Ironically, this is the same administrator who had previously encouraged students to take pride in their natural hair textures and cultural identity.
The student affected has been coping with personal loss and mental health challenges, and this interaction left her visibly distressed. As someone who has also faced negative comments about my natural hair, I was deeply saddened to witness such insensitivity from someone in a leadership role – especially in an environment that should empower young people.
This incident underscores the urgent need for open conversations about texturism and professionalism in educational spaces. No student should be made to feel ashamed for wearing their natural hair. Schools must be places that affirm and uplift students’ identities, not diminish them.
I hope this letter raises awareness and encourages reflection on how we can ensure that our institutions remain safe and affirming for all students – regardless of how they choose to wear their hair.
