Letter of the Day | Let’s open our doors to fellow Jamaicans in need
THE EDITOR, Madam:
The recent hurricane has left a devastating impact across western Jamaica – particularly in Westmoreland, St Elizabeth, St James, Trelawny, and Hanover. Thousands of homes have been destroyed or severely damaged, displacing many families – many of whom have small children and elderly Jamaicans who are now struggling to find safety and stability.
Across the island, people have shown great kindness through donations of food, clothing, and supplies. Yet, beyond these efforts, one meaningful way we can assist is by opening our homes to those who have lost theirs. Offering temporary accommodation for four to eight weeks could bring relief and dignity to fellow Jamaicans who now have nowhere else to turn.
This effort can be facilitated through the Ministry of Labour and Social Security, which could help identify both those most in need of temporary housing and individuals willing to assist. With the support of social workers, families can be properly matched to ensure safety and comfort for everyone involved.
The recovery ahead will take time, but the first step is ensuring that our people have a safe place to rest. By acting now and helping each other, we can ensure that no Jamaican is left without shelter or hope in this difficult time.
