Practical measures for the rebuilding process
THE EDITOR, Madam:
It seems to me that during the rebuilding process in the hardest hit parishes, the Government should give serious consideration to allocating a portion of funds donated to Hurricane Melissa relief efforts to constructing structurally sound apartment buildings to replace destroyed abodes within those parishes.
All remaining wooden poles in the Jamaica Public Service Company’s network should be phased out completely and replaced with concrete and/or metal ones over as short a period of time as possible.
More drains should be added to the current road infrastructure islandwide, and all new road constructions should be designed with as many drains within the infrastructure as possible.
Last, with the ocean of rains the island has experienced and endured, this year, and will experience, in the future, a significant portion of that pure water should be captured and stored via a catchment system established by the Ministry of Agriculture. This would then be distributed to the nation’s rural farmers and, in particular, during extended periods of drought.
