Focus on earthquakes, too

Reference is made to the article titled ‘Concrete Deck or Zinc – What’s the Best Option?’ by your Guest Columnist Mr. Jamel Banton, published in The Gleaner on December 15, 2025.

The article was well written, timely, and highly informative, particularly in the aftermath of Hurricane Melissa. It effectively highlighted the importance of proper building practices and structural continuity – from foundation to walls to roof – regardless of whether zinc or concrete decking is used.

The article appropriately emphasised building security from a hurricane-resilience perspective, which is understandable given the recent devastation caused by Hurricane Melissa. The discussion on climate change and the need for safer, more affordable construction was especially valuable and educational for homeowners, builders, and policymakers alike.

However, while the article briefly mentioned earthquakes, it did not place equal emphasis on building resilience from an earthquake perspective.

Given that Jamaica has experienced more frequent and increasingly intense seismic activity in recent years, additional public education and awareness on earthquake-resistant construction and relevant building code requirements would be equally beneficial. Had Jamaica recently suffered the major effects of an earthquake, the focus of the article might understandably have pivoted in that direction.

In this regard, it would be useful if future articles could further explore how homes and other structures can be designed and constructed to better withstand earthquakes, alongside hurricanes. Such guidance would greatly enhance public understanding and contribute to safer, more resilient communities.

Thank you for publishing such a valuable and thought-provoking article. I look forward to continued contributions from Mr. Banton on these critical national issues.
