Barbados calls to us

THE EDITOR, Madam:

I am writing with reference to Tony Deyal’s column about Barbados in The Gleaner. It was genuinely exciting to revisit the country through his words. Having visited Barbados myself, I fell in love with the island and its people – and his article beautifully captured the spirit I experienced.

From the moment I stepped off the plane, I felt a noticeable difference. The warmth of the people, their sincere smiles, and the overall kindness left a lasting impression. One memorable example was when I tried to help a driver with my luggage, and he gently insisted it was his job – a gesture repeated throughout my stay whenever I travelled with bags.

The calm and patient demeanour of Bajans also stood out. I recall a fellow traveller from Jamaica becoming upset after making our driver late, but the driver simply replied, “Calm yourself. It’s okay.”– a moment that spoke volumes about the national character.

What won my heart was the generosity I encountered. On my first day alone, I was treated to local fish cakes after an interview, given an impromptu tour of Bridgetown by a friendly local, and even offered a complimentary dinner – and this warmth continued throughout my trip.

It was also moving to hear reggae music played so widely and to feel the clear affection for Jamaicans there. Beyond the people, I was struck by Barbados’ cleanliness, strong infrastructure, free beaches, and leadership that speaks with conviction.

Tony Deyal’s column reminded me why I’m not only recommending Barbados to everyone but also considering moving there with my family. We have a home in Florida, yet Barbados calls to us – and after reading his piece, I understand why all over again.

Thank you for sharing such a refreshing and heartfelt article and the humour. It made my day.
