Let us practise Ubuntu

THE EDITOR, Madam:

Ubuntu is an African principle that emphasises interconnectedness, compassion, and community over individualism. It is time for this to become our lived reality.

People of African descent must break free from the divisions and negative perceptions that once separated us. Caribbean people and African Americans need to move beyond old stereotypes and work toward unity. This begins with listening to one another, understanding our different journeys, and collaborating on solutions to the challenges we face in our various contexts.

Those in the West must stop viewing Africa through a colonial lens, and those on the continent should recognise the resilience of the Diaspora, who survived the harshest forms of slavery. Beyond understanding, we must actively look out for one another’s well-being.

The African Union’s recognition of the Diaspora as its Sixth Global Region (AU6RG) is a major step toward this unity. This designation affirms that the diaspora is an integral part of Africa, not separate from it. It benefits both the continent and those who live outside it.

Recent actions reflect the spirit of Ubuntu: Kenya’s decision to assist Haiti and Rwandan church leaders supporting Haitian church leaders as they navigate ongoing crises. The Caribbean must not give up on Haiti – a nation that led the region as the first sovereign state and the first in the Americas to abolish slavery.

People of African descent worldwide continue to face hardship. In Brazil, despite making up more than half the population, Afro-Brazilians remain disproportionately affected by poverty and systemic inequality. Many inner-city communities across the Diaspora face similar struggles.

Let us commit to helping one another first. This will strengthen our dignity, improve outcomes for our people, and earn greater respect globally. In Jamaica, we remain grateful for the support African nations have shown, including during Hurricane Melissa.

Let us practise Ubuntu and, as Scripture teaches, care not only for our own interests but also for the interests of others.
