THE EDITOR, Madam:
Pope Leo XIV has produced his first encyclical, Magnifica Humanitas, consisting of 42,300 words in the English version.
He speaks about the need to value human beings and protect their roles in society. While AI can perform many tasks better and faster than humans, what about the qualities that define our humanity? Would AI use the quantity of yellow paint that Van Gogh did or apply an equal amount of each colour? Would AI ask, “To be or not to be?” Would it passionately support a soccer team at the bottom of the standings?
From my perspective as a retired mathematics teacher, would AI realise that not all students enjoy mathematics and that some find it challenging?
There are presumably Latin, Italian, and other versions of this document, which would have kept him busy, even if AI assisted with translation or drafting much of the content.
We are safe, but only if we use AI as a tool and not as an equal. Perhaps it would be wise to include a prominent ‘off’ switch.
