THE EDITOR, Madam:

Jamaica’s security landscape is increasingly complex, shaped by evolving threats, enterprise-wide risks, technological advances, and the need to protect both tangible and intangible assets.

Traditional guarding methods alone are no longer sufficient. Security companies must equip their officers to be proactive rather than reactive in managing risk.

Effective asset protection now demands more than simple deterrence. Clients expect officers who are professionally trained and able to apply their knowledge in de-escalation, incident response, crisis and crowd management, evacuation procedures, business continuity, and customer service. In many organisations, the first point of contact is the security officer, making professional appearance and conduct critical. Companies that fail to modernise risk losing their competitive edge.

Technology continues to transform security operations. Officers must be familiar with modern tools such as electronic access control systems, CCTV surveillance, alarm monitoring, mobile reporting applications, integrated platforms, and digital incident reporting. Keeping pace with these innovations is essential.

In addition, guards need a solid understanding of physical security systems, including deterrence, detection, delay, and response. Knowledge of lighting, locking systems, key management, and intrusion detection enables them to better assess and protect their environments. Training opportunities, such as those offered by ASIS International Jamaica Chapter, provide globally recognised certification and support capacity building.

Leadership development is also vital. Supervisors and managers should be trained in team leadership, performance management, incident investigation, decision-making, mentoring, and operational planning.

Strengthening personnel development, embracing technology, improving procedures, and enhancing supervision will better position Jamaica’s private security sector to meet modern challenges, satisfy clients, and deliver higher-quality service.
