Since chippin’ in the blazing sun and ‘whining’ in the rain at the recent Carnival in Jamaica Road March, many are already feeling a serious case of carnival tabanca. For others, like marketing consultant Denille Bahadosingh, the sweet memories of the soca season offer a moment to reflect on a personal transformation. Starting at a size extra large, her behind-the-scenes hard work and dedication got her down to a size medium by Carnival Sunday.

After suffering the tremendous loss of both parents to cancer, the content creator was inspired to start a movement focused on maintaining a healthy lifestyle. “Along the way, I’ve just included things that mean a lot to me; things that will give me a little extra motivation, like Carnival in Jamaica,” Bahadosingh told Lifestyle.

Movement, in its physical sense, included walking at least 10,000 steps daily. As she maintained a steady pace, she set a new goal of reaching 14,000 steps. “Unfortunately, I was not able to increase my steps to 14K because it was really difficult to do so before work. But on the weekends when I was able to work out, walk in the evenings, or just walk more overall, I was able to achieve it,” she revealed.

While many would have taken the chance to relax while on vacation, Bahadosingh was exceeding her step goals. “When I went on that little vacation just before carnival, it was really hard to stick to my diet. But one of the things I did to make sure I maintained my weight, at least, was steps. I walked 18,000 to 20,000 daily,” she shared.

When it comes to nutrition, although she is nowhere where she wants to be, she has kept her promise of cutting down on sugary drinks. “From the beginning of the journey, I’ve always maintained that I will not be drinking my calories. I really believe that many of us are drinking ourselves sick. So I mostly drink water and flavoured water. With just cutting out sugary beverages and doing my walking, I’ve been able to accomplish so much,” she added.

Experiencing this weight loss has been the ultimate confidence booster, and to celebrate her newfound body, she hit the streets of Kingston on Sunday. As a returning reveller, jumping with Gen XS for the second time was nothing short of amazing.

“It was a 10-out-of-10 experience for me; from being on the road, the drinks were flowing, the vibes were vibing, and the lunch time was excellent. Even after the party was good. Gen XS came to win this year,” she said.

In preparing for the main event, she enjoyed choosing her costume, one that would show a different side of the marketer. “I wanted to try some different colours that I had never done before. And I also wanted a costume that would really reflect that I was working on my body. I normally wear a full-coverage costume. This is my first time wearing a costume that showed off my body. And it was actually recommended to me by my favourite influencer and friend, Rushcam. And he was encouraging me to step outside of my comfort zone; I’m glad that I did.”

The weight loss has also improved the way in which she conducts daily activities. She doesn’t feel as lethargic. And while on the road, she was the only person in the group who wasn’t tired at the end of the road march. “That’s something I definitely feel proud about,” she said, adding, “The biggest lesson this journey has taught me is that I am able to do anything that I set my mind to.”

With plans to improve her figure even further for Dream Weekend, she encourages anyone who is on their fitness journey to apply themselves and chase their goals, because it’s definitely attainable. “Whatever you think of, you can definitely achieve it with just a little work. It does seem very daunting sometimes and [makes you ask yourself], ‘Why am I even bothering to do this?’ But there’s a point to it. Just remember your why and keep focused.”
