As part of Healthcare Workers’ Appreciation Month, Bellevue Hospital held its annual Staff Awards Ceremony on Friday at the Oo Park on the compound. The event recognised staff members who play vital roles in Jamaica’s mental health care. Carita Williams-Lindsay, senior human resource officer, was named employee of the year. She was selected from more than 25 nominees and is known for her leadership and mentorship.

Describing the award as a dream come true, Williams-Lindsay added that, “This award affirms that hard work, consistency, and a heart for service do not go unnoticed,” she said. “Even behind the scenes, we are part of the patient care journey.”

Crystal Davis, registered nurse, and Sandra Buckley, assistant dietitian, were named first and second runners-up in the same category, a reflection of their compassion, integrity, and years of unwavering commitment to those in their care.

This year’s ceremony also introduced the People’s Choice award, which allowed staff to vote for the colleague who truly embodies the spirit of Bellevue. That honour went to Sheryl Dunbar-Simmonds, patient care assistant, whose kindness and quiet dedication have left a lasting impression on patients and peers.

Top-performing team members from each department were also spotlighted for their excellence, and special awards such as Rising Star, Clinical Excellence, Client’s Champion, Junior Manager of the Year, and Senior Manager of the Year celebrated those going above and beyond in their roles. The ceremony also paid tribute to retirees and long-serving staff members.

“Our staff give so much of themselves every day,” Suzette Buchanan, the hospital’s CEO said. “This event is our way of saying, we see you, we value you, and your work makes a difference. When people feel appreciated, they are empowered to keep showing up with excellence, and that is what keeps our institution strong.”

Looking ahead, Williams-Lindsay is determined to turn her recognition into impact. She plans to launch a mental wellness drive focused on creating safe spaces for staff to explore emotional wellbeing, manage stress, and prevent burnout.

“We’re a mental health institution, but we must also care for our own minds,” she shared, adding, “Recognition is beautiful, but real change comes when every team member feels supported, seen, and empowered.”
