When it came to the showdown between the Red Dragons and the Blue Blazers, it was a clash of grit, speed and team spirit. One team blazed ahead to claim victory, but the real triumph was the nostalgia and wellness-fuelled fun behind this adult sports day, made possible by personal trainer Rohan Francis of Frano Fitness.

With dreams of making an event of this nature a reality, this summer seemed like the perfect time to execute the vision at the Portmore Harbour Beach in St Catherine. “We had two houses competing for the top prize: Red Dragons and Blue Blazers. And there were some really exciting races on the day. The events included shuttle runs, mixed relays, sprints, tug of war, lime-and- spoon races, sack races, and an obstacle course. We even had the athletes competing in a Gatorade-drinking contest,” he told Lifestyle.

To his knowledge, gym beach sports days like this are rare locally, which made the occasion even more special. “Our sports day really boiled down to three fundamental elements: growth, community, and having fun. It gave clients the chance to celebrate the work we’ve put in, push ourselves in different ways and build even stronger bonds as a team.”

For those clients who were interested in participating in the sports day, they were able to sign up through a Google Form. The names were then exported to an Excel sheet, and a formula was used to randomly assign each person to a competing house.

“The buildup was both exciting and demanding. From the initial idea to full execution, it took a few weeks to map out all the logistics, organising teams, securing the venue and sponsors, and planning the flow of the day. The main goal was to make sure the experience was enjoyable, safe, and engaging for everyone involved. Seeing it all come together was truly rewarding,” Francis shared.

In addition to the merriment of races, there was an exciting cheerleading competition. The teams, Francis highlighted, were judged on creativity, synchronisation, energy and enthusiasm, choreography, uniformity, and overall appearance. “It was amazing to see how each squad brought their best to the floor,” he added.

Captain of the Blue Blazers and active member of the cheerleading team, Alecia Bogle, was overjoyed by the camaraderie and friendly competition of the day, “Being a part of Frano Fitness sports day was so amazing! We were all looking forward to it. As a cheerleader, my team and I practised six days a week for the competition. The competitiveness between blue house and red house was top-tier! And even though we were competitive, we did it with love. To take home that win, we felt like we had won the lotto! I can’t wait for next year!”

While the Blue Blazers won the cheerleading competition, it was the Red Dragons team that emerged as the overall winners.

Red Dragons’ Mikalo Parker, who collected first place for the sprint and obstacle course race, had this to say, “Sports day was full of vibes and energy. Despite it being a competition between two teams, there was this unity among everyone. I was just happy to help my house in copping that win for my team. It was pure excitement. And we were elated to put in the work and get that gold trophy.”

Many others, like Bogle and Parker, highlighted the enthusiasm and energy as a major highlight of the event, sharing how much they are looking forward to the next staging.

“I’m passionate about community-building and the power of teamwork. That’s why creating teams for this event was so important to me, highlighting how working together can achieve great things, even when we’re just getting to know each other. It was truly a joy to witness the success of the day and to see everyone come together with such energy and unity,” Francis reflected.
