More than skin deep for Dr Romario Thomas - Absolut Skin founder builds purpose from lived experience, patient care

"My interest in dermatology started with my own experience growing up with atopic dermatitis,” Dr Romario Thomas told Sunday Lifestyle. “It gave me an appreciation for how deeply skin disease can affect a person's confidence and daily life." The reflection from the consultant dermatologist, cosmetic surgeon, and entrepreneur offers insight into a journey shaped as much by personal experience as professional ambition. Growing up between Portmore and Clarendon, Thomas was no stranger to the challenges skin disease can present, developing an early understanding of how skin conditions can affect both physical well-being and self-confidence.
Today, Thomas has built a reputation in his specialisations, with his work taking him beyond treating skin conditions to developing solutions aimed at improving access to skincare education, products, and specialist care throughout the region.
That personal connection to skin health deepened throughout medical school and postgraduate training, where mentors inspired him to pursue dermatology. Although he initially trained in general surgery, he eventually realised that he was drawn to dermatology's blend of medicine, surgery, aesthetics, and long-term patient care.
"There wasn't a single defining moment," he explained, adding, "It was a series of experiences that reinforced my passion for dermatology."
His professional journey later expanded into cosmetic surgery, a discipline that complements his work by allowing him to address both the medical and aesthetic concerns of patients. Together, the two fields have enabled him to focus not only on treatment but also on confidence, wellness, and quality of life.
Crediting his parents for helping to shape the values that continue to guide him today, Thomas noted that his “parents instilled in me the values of hard work, discipline, education, and perseverance”.
Beyond medicine, he describes himself as an entrepreneur, mentor, and lifelong learner who is constantly exploring new ideas. Had he not pursued medicine, he believes he would likely have found himself building businesses in technology, real estate, or other innovation-driven industries.
"I enjoy identifying problems and creating solutions," he said. "Those fields share many of the same skills — innovation, leadership, problem-solving, and creating value for others."
ABSOLUT SKIN
That entrepreneurial mindset eventually led to the creation of Absolut Skin, a Jamaican skincare and health-tech company, launched at the end of 2024, designed to address challenges he repeatedly observed among patients seeking guidance for their skin concerns.
"Too many people struggled to access reliable skincare advice, quality products, and specialist care," Thomas shared.
Rather than creating another skincare brand, Thomas envisioned a platform that combines education, technology, professional guidance, and skincare products to help people make informed decisions about their skin health.
"Jamaica has tremendous talent and tremendous potential. I wanted to create something that was built with our people and our region in mind while still meeting international standards."
He hopes Absolut Skin will evolve into one of the Caribbean's leading skin-health platforms, helping people better understand their skin while improving access to personalised care through technology.
Outside of medicine and business, Thomas values opportunities to disconnect and recharge. While a true day off is rare, he enjoys travelling, spending time in nature, exploring rivers, exercising, and discovering new experiences. He also enjoys experimenting with homemade cocktails and appreciates the creativity involved in the craft.
"For me, creating something meaningful is both work and recreation," he added.
So, what keeps this dermatologist and cosmetic surgeon going after so many years? His answer is simple: "Seeing the difference we can make in people's lives."
That perspective became even more profound following the loss of his mother in 2021, an experience he says reinforced the importance of living purposefully and making every day count.
Ultimately, Thomas hopes his legacy will extend beyond medicine.
"I would like to be remembered as someone who made healthcare more accessible, empowered people through education, and created opportunities for others," he said.
Whether through patient care, mentorship, or innovation, his work reflects a belief that world-class ideas can emerge from Jamaica and create meaningful impact far beyond its shores.
SUMMER SKINCARE TIPS
As Jamaicans navigate increasingly high temperatures this summer, Thomas is encouraging people to take a proactive approach to skincare.
"Many skin conditions are easier to treat when identified early," he added.
His recommendations remain straightforward: use a gentle cleanser, a moisturiser suited to your skin type and a broad-spectrum sunscreen every day. He also recommends ingredients such as vitamin C, niacinamide, and antioxidants, noting that consistency is often more important than having an elaborate skincare routine.
