CISOCA issues alert over increased reports of sexual assaults in Corporate Area

Published:Tuesday | May 7, 2019 | 12:00 AM

The Centre for the Investigation of Sexual Offences and Child Abuse (CISOCA) has issued an alert for persons taking public transportation, particularly females, in the Corporate Area arising from what it says is an increase in reports of sexual assaults.

CISOCA says detectives have received a number of reports in recent times from females who alleged that they were sexually assaulted by men posing as drivers and/or passengers of unregistered taxis.

The incidents reported so far have occurred in the Corporate Area.

In light of this, the police unit is urging persons to remain vigilant when taking public passenger vehicles.

It is advising that members of the public only utilise established and reputable public passenger vehicles.

Additionally, the following are some steps that persons can take to ramp up their personal security when taking public passenger vehicles:

* Take note of the licence plate number of vehicles and share this information with a family member or trusted friend. Also share a description of the motor vehicle.

* Along with the licence plate number, take note of the driver—any distinguishing marks or traits. If a PPV badge is displayed, note the name and other details.

*Always be wary when PPVs stray from the designated route.

* Persons who may have been victims of sexual assaults are encouraged to report the incident to CISOCA by calling 876-926-4079. Additionally, anyone with information that can assist investigators to nab the culprits is being asked to contact the CISOCA detectives or 311.
