The Ministry of Education and Youth is reporting that grief counsellors were sent to the Belmont Park Primary in Portmore, St Catherine today to give support to the school community following the murder of a teacher.

Grade 6 volunteer teacher 35-year-old Clevon Campbell was shot and killed and his nephew shot and injured in a home invasion early yesterday morning.

The teen remains hospitalised.

The Ministry says it will continue to offer its support in the coming days by maintaining the grief counselling sessions at the school.

Minister without Portfolio Karl Samuda says he is deeply troubled the news of Campbell’s murder on the day that is set to recognise the hard work and sacrifice of the nation’s teachers.

Samuda says he has been told that Campbell was so passionate about his job that he would stay at school after hours just to ensure that his work was complete and that his students were given the attention they needed to prepare for the Primary Exit Profile.

That, he says, is a testament to the calibre of work he produced.

Principal of the institution, Roy John-Keith, says Campbell was a resourceful person who was willing to serve whenever he was called on for assistance.

Samuda expressed condolences to Campbell’s family and colleagues, adding that he’s praying for the speedy recovery of the injured teen.
